Your franchise agreement says the royalty is a set percentage of revenue. That's the number you remember. But it's rarely the number you actually pay. Technology fees, marketing fund contributions, training, required vendors and periodic system upgrades all come out of the same revenue. Until you add them up as one percentage, you don't have a clear view of what the franchise really costs you.

## The number on the contract isn't the number on your P&L

On your P&L, the royalty shows up as one tidy line. Everything else the system charges is spread across other lines: software, advertising, training, supplies bought from approved vendors. Each one looks reasonable on its own. Together, they can add up to a total far higher than the royalty you signed for.

That's not necessarily a problem. A system that delivers real value can be worth a high total cost. The problem is not knowing the total, because then you can't judge whether you're getting that value.

## Where to find the full list of fees

You don't have to reconstruct it from memory. Your Franchise Disclosure Document lists the fees the franchisor charges beyond the initial franchise fee, in Item 6 ("Other Fees"). The [FTC Franchise Rule, 16 CFR 436.5(f)](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-16/chapter-I/subchapter-D/part-436/subpart-C/section-436.5), requires that table to list all other fees you must pay the franchisor or its affiliates, or that it collects for a third party, including any formula used to compute them. Start there. Then add the costs that don't appear as fees but are still required: approved-vendor pricing, mandatory technology, and the upgrades or remodels the agreement requires on a schedule.

## Run the number for your own locations

Pull the last twelve months. For each location, add up every payment that exists because you're in the system, and divide it by that location's revenue. Do it per location, not just in total, because the same fee is a much bigger share of revenue at your weakest location than at your strongest. If your locations don't count revenue the same way, line that up first; [Four Locations, Four Ways of Counting](https://www.brookwoodgrowth.com/blog/four-locations-four-ways-counting) covers what to standardize.

*Illustrative example:* a location doing $1M a year with a 6% royalty, a 2% marketing fund and $30K a year in required technology and vendor premiums is paying 11% to be in the system, not 6%.

## What the number tells you

Once you have one total percentage per location, three questions get much easier to answer:

**Is the system earning its share?** List what you actually get for the total: brand, leads, purchasing power, software, support. Compare the value you receive with the total you carry, and know that answer before renewal.

**Which locations can carry it?** A cost that's comfortable at your best location can be what quietly sinks your weakest one.

**What should you negotiate?** Renewal, a new territory, or a transfer may create an opportunity to discuss terms. Walking in with your real number, per location, is a different conversation from arguing about the royalty alone.

### What costs beyond the royalty should a franchise owner count?

Every recurring or required payment that exists because you're in the system: technology fees, marketing fund contributions, training, approved-vendor premiums, and required upgrades or remodels. Your Franchise Disclosure Document's Item 6 lists the fees; your own books show the rest.

### How do I calculate my true franchise cost?

For each location, add up the last twelve months of those payments and divide by that location's revenue. Compare the result to the royalty in your agreement.

### Why calculate it per location instead of in total?

Because fixed fees weigh more on lower-revenue locations. A total across all locations can look fine while one location is paying a share it can't sustain.
