AEO / GEO Plain-language guide

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) means making your business easy for search tools and AI assistants to understand, so they can pull an accurate answer from it. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the same idea aimed at AI-written answers. It comes down to the same discipline we use on your numbers: find where the facts disagree, and fix the source, not the symptom.

01 The words

AEO, GEO,
and the rest,
defined.

AEO is answer engine optimization. The goal is for a search tool or assistant to find a correct answer on your own pages when someone asks a direct question.

GEO is generative engine optimization. The goal is to be included when an AI writes an answer from several sources.

AI search optimization, geo optimization, GEO SEO, AI visibility are other names for the same work. Learn one idea and you have all of them.

02 For owner-operators

Multi-location
and home-service
owners.

Your customers already ask questions like who is the best option nearby, what does a service call involve, and do you cover their area. An assistant answers from whatever it can read and trust.

That is why the boring facts matter. Service areas, services offered, hours, and how to book should read the same on your site, your listings, and every location page. When two locations describe the business two different ways, the answer gets muddy.

Write each service as a direct answer to a real customer question, on its own page, in plain words.

03 For private lenders

Be easy to
describe in
one sentence.

Borrowers and brokers ask assistants which lenders fit a specific deal. If your site does not say what you fund, in which situations, and how someone applies, the assistant has nothing accurate to say about you.

State the loan types you do, the deals you decline, and your process in plain language. Say it the same way everywhere you appear.

04 What to do first

Five questions.
One afternoon.

Ask an AI assistant the five questions a new customer would ask about your business. Write down what it gets wrong, what it leaves out, and who it names instead.

Then fix the source: the page that should have answered, the fact that disagrees across your listings, the service you never explained. Ask again in a few weeks.

What is AEO in simple terms?

AEO is answer engine optimization. It is the work of making your website clear enough that a search tool or AI assistant can pull a correct answer from it. It starts with the same thing our diagnostic work always starts with: plain pages, and facts that agree with each other.

Is GEO the same as AEO?

They overlap a lot. AEO is usually about being the answer a search tool shows. GEO is about being included in an answer an AI writes. The fixes are nearly the same: clear pages, consistent facts, and direct answers to real questions.

Is AI search optimization different from either one?

It is another name for the same work. People also say geo optimization, GEO SEO, or AI visibility. The label changes. The job is being easy to understand and easy to quote.

Can anyone guarantee my business shows up in AI answers?

No. The tools decide what to show, and they change often. Be careful with anyone who promises placement. What you can do is remove the reasons a tool would skip you, then check the answers yourself.

Do I need this if I already rank on Google?

Ranking helps, but it does not settle it. An AI assistant may answer from a few pages it trusts and never send anyone to a results page. It is worth asking the questions your customers ask and reading what comes back.

Where should an owner start?

Ask an AI assistant the five questions a new customer would ask about your business. Note what it gets wrong, what it leaves out, and who it names instead. That list is your first set of fixes.
